Sony has secured exclusive rights to market Grand Theft Auto 6 alongside the PS5 and PS5 Pro, according to a new report. The close relationship between Sony and Rockstar Games dates back to the PS2 era, so a collaboration on the marketing of the long-awaited GTA 6 would not be surprising.
Few game series have captured the attention of the general consumer as much as GTA, which has sold over 410 million copies worldwide as of September 2023. The next installment in the series, GTA 6, is set to drive this figure even higher due to the enormous hype surrounding the game. Although GTA 6 is expected for fall 2025, fans have long been wondering when Rockstar will show more of the game. Some are even trying to decipher clues that could point to future announcements from Rockstar – but so far without success.
It remains to be seen exactly when the next trailer for GTA 6 will be released, but rumors about the game are increasing. It was recently speculated that Sony may have concluded a deal with Rockstar to secure exclusive marketing rights for GTA 6.
According to industry insider MAGG on the latest episode of the XNC podcast, Sony has struck a deal that will allow the company to promote the game exclusively with the PS5 and PS5 Pro. The insider emphasized that this deal will not affect the availability of GTA 6 for Xbox Series X|S.
MAGG added that this exclusive marketing deal will be announced when the second trailer for GTA 6 is released, which will presumably feature the PlayStation logo. He also believes that the second trailer could be aired at the Game Awards 2024, but is not sure.
Interestingly, MAGG’s report was confirmed by another insider named RedGamingTech on Twitter. However, both insiders recommend taking this information with a grain of salt until it is officially confirmed.
Should PlayStation secure exclusive marketing rights for such a groundbreaking title as GTA 6, it could be a huge success for Sony. Not only would this lead to PlayStation being closely associated with GTA 6 in the minds of consumers, but it would also open up the possibility of bundling PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles with the game.
As a game that will only be released for the current generation of consoles, GTA 6 is likely to lead to a huge increase in PS5 and Xbox Series X|S sales. Many new buyers could opt for the console that comes with a copy of GTA 6. In addition, a special PS5 Pro setting for GTA 6, which may allow the game to run at 60 FPS, could be another sales strategy – but only time will tell.
